Julia and Harold: The Wedding that Hurricane Irene Couldn’t Stop
We first met Julia and Harold at City Bakery, where we had a lively conversation about the virtues of cookies and chocolate. Julia and Harold truly have an infectious zest for life. We admired their adventurous honeymoon destination — a trip around the Mediterranean, with stops in Santorini and Istanbul.
Well, the universe seems to have wanted to test their sense of adventure, because Hurricane Irene decided to blast through New York City on the night their wedding was scheduled, at Battery Gardens in lower Manhattan. We were on the phone making contingency plans with their fabulous wedding planner, Stasia Anthony, right up until late Friday afternoon, when the city ordered all of lower Manhattan evacuated. At about 3:30 pm, the phone rang. It was Stasia: “We’re going to have the wedding right now. How fast can you get into the city?”
Kyo gathered his equipment together, jumped in the car, and made it to their wedding in the nick of time. The flower designer, Katherine Toland, arranged gorgeous bouquets in record time and navigated horrendous traffic to get Julia her flowers. Congratulations, Julia and Harold!!!
