Invisible Dog Art Center Wedding: Cara and Drew
There were so many things about Cara and Drew’s wedding that I loved. Well, let’s start with Item Number One: they were so laid-back! They had the perfect balance of let’s-not-make-too-much-of-a-fuss-over-wedding-details, while at the same time, they did so many quirky things to make the wedding utterly personal to them.
Cara started the day getting ready at an Airbnb owned by The Invisible Dog Art Center. She and Drew both told us that they do not like getting their pictures taken, but they both have such a good sense of humor and ready laugh that you would never guess they felt uncomfortable.
Cara’s exuberantly colorful wedding flowers were put together by Molly Oliver. While we have worked with a number of the vendors at Cara and Drew’s wedding before (like Polka Dot Events and 74 Events), this was our first wedding with flowers by Molly, and we were so happy to find out about her! Molly grows her own flowers in NYC through two non-profit organizations, The Youth Farm and East New York Farms!, that teach young people how to grow organic flowers, fruits and vegetables. For flowers that she and her young farmers didn’t grow themselves, she sources from local farms in New York and New Jersey. She is an amazing flower designer and obviously an inspiring educator — check out Molly’s website to learn more.
Koala bears seemed to be everywhere at Cara and Drew’s wedding. There were koala bear place holder cards, a koala bear cake topping, and koala bear screenprintings. When I asked Cara why, she told me, “Koala is Drew’s nickname for me. I call him Pinky, from Pinky and the Brain.” Nice.
Speaking of screen-printing, I loved what Cara and Drew did in lieu of a guest book. Drew silk-screened a bunch of old snapshots of the two of them and mounted them on the wall — perfect for an art gallery venue like The Invisible Dog Art Center. Guests hung out by the gallery wall throughout the evening, looking at the prints and signing them.
Naturally Cara and Drew had a little twist when it came to the standard ending to a wedding: the cake-cutting. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, they had a multi-tiered, gigantic chocolate chip cookie cake. That’s because neither Cara nor Drew particularly likes cake. But Drew is a pretty big fan of chocolate chip cookies. So they found an obliging local bakery, Naidre’s Cafe in Park Slope, who made them a fantastic chocolate chip cookie cake, not to mention a mouth-watering spread of assorted cookies for dessert.
Cheers to a life full of more laughter, chocolate chip cookies, and koala bears.
