century for the cure bike ride
This past weekend I photographed the Century for the Cure ride. This is a charitable bike ride raising money for cancer research. It has a really interesting back story:
In 1990, Scott Glickman, along with friends Scott Dight and Richard Bernstein, began participating in the 200 mile Pan Mass Challenge bike-a-thon which benefits the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. In 1997, after doing the ride for many years and raising significant funds for Dana Farber, Scott was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. While undergoing chemotherapy at the Cancer Institute of NJ, in New Brunswick, NJ, it was a goal of Scott’s to recover to a point where he would be able to participate in another Pan Mass Challenge. He realized that dream in 1999.
After doing the PMC event for 5 more years, Scott Glickman decided that it was time to give back to the hospital that was so instrumental to his recovery. So in 2005, 13 riders rode 100 miles in the first Century for the Cure, raising over $30,000 for The Cancer Institute of NJ. In 2008, a 2nd route option was added, giving riders a choice between a 100 mile route or a 40 mile route. 105 riders rode and collectively raised over $127,000, bringing the 4 year total to over $310,000. I had a great time shooting this ride. There were all different types of people there, from competitive cyclists to regular people who just ride for fun with their families. The spirit was truly inspiring, and I feel lucky to have been a part of it.
