Rainy Wedding Photography

Rain is often one of the biggest worries couples have before their wedding day.

After photographing weddings in every kind of weather—from light mist to steady rain—we’ve learned that the weather rarely defines the experience. Some of the most memorable photographs happen when couples embrace the day instead of fighting it.

Our goal isn’t to make the rain disappear. It’s to tell the story of your wedding honestly while creating beautiful portraits whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Why We Love Rainy Weddings

Rain changes the pace of a wedding in the best possible way.

Guests gather a little closer. Umbrellas become part of the story. Reflections on sidewalks and streets add texture, and soft overcast light creates flattering portraits throughout the day.

Rather than treating rain as a setback, we look for the opportunities it creates.

Our Approach

We’re always watching the weather leading up to your wedding and stay flexible throughout the day.

If the rain eases for even a few minutes, we’ll suggest stepping outside for portraits. If it continues, we’ll use covered walkways, porches, architecture, large windows, or indoor spaces with beautiful natural light.

Our documentary approach doesn’t change because of the weather. The focus remains on the people, the emotions, and the atmosphere of the day.

Rain Can Create Beautiful Photographs

Some of our favorite rainy-day images include:

  • Clear umbrellas
  • Reflections on city streets
  • Historic buildings
  • Covered porches
  • Green gardens after rainfall
  • Moody skies
  • Fog rolling through the landscape
  • Cozy indoor celebrations
  • Candlelit receptions
  • Night portraits in the rain

Every wedding becomes unique because the weather is part of the story.

Tips for a Rainy Wedding

Bring clear umbrellas

Transparent umbrellas allow more natural light and keep faces visible in photographs.

Build flexibility into your timeline

A few extra minutes in the schedule can make all the difference if the weather changes.

Trust the forecast—but don’t obsess over it

Forecasts often change throughout the day. We’ve photographed weddings where rain was expected all afternoon and ended up with beautiful sunshine during portraits.

Choose a venue with indoor and outdoor options

Venues with covered porches, gardens, barns, conservatories, or large windows provide beautiful alternatives if the weather changes.

FAQ

Should we cancel portraits if it rains?

Not at all. Some of our favorite wedding portraits have been made in light rain or immediately after a shower when the light is soft and the surroundings feel fresh.

Do you bring umbrellas?

We recommend that couples have a few clear umbrellas available. They photograph beautifully and help keep everyone comfortable.

What if it rains all day?

We’ll adapt throughout the day by using covered outdoor spaces, windows, architectural features, and indoor locations with natural light. Rain rarely prevents us from creating meaningful photographs.

Is cloudy weather actually better for portraits?

In many situations, yes. Overcast skies create soft, even light that is flattering and helps avoid harsh shadows.

Have you photographed weddings in heavy rain?

Yes. Every wedding presents different conditions, and we’re experienced in working comfortably through changing weather while keeping the focus on your celebration.
